Flash On the Beach

Alltop, all the cool kids (and me)

It's been a long time since Adobe announced the existence of a tool that would allow the conversion of the (shall I say notorious) Nellymoser audio codec used in flv recordings on Flash Media Server to mp3. The tool was meant to appear on labs but to this date hasn't shown up. Unsurprisingly many people started to search for alternatives and apart from one linux specific exception there was no way to convert flv audio using Nellymoser to mp3 audio, even ffmpeg can't do it.

So I was very surprised when one of my forum members emansouri today pointed us to a tool by the name of Total Video Converter. I gave it a quick try and I can confirm that it did in fact manage to convert a FCS 1.5.2 recorded flv to mp3 format. Total Video Converter also appears to handle tons of other format, including 8 other audio formats as well as mpeg4 and PSP video. When encoding TO flv however the tool does not appear to inject any metadata into the file. But I guess for flv encoding we better stick to established tools.

Total Video Converter does seem to be a one man effort so don't expect much support. The commandline syntax also appears to be tricky to grasp as the original poster reports in this thread. Still this is one step forward towards building some neat podcasting apps a la odeo.com.

Adobe, please post the promised flv to mp3 tool - we still want and need it.

Just waiting for OSFlash to process an app that I have written, for muxing and demuxing audio tracks and metadata out of FLV files. NellyMoser is not currently supported but high on the wishlist.

If you really want the Adobe flv->mp3 tool simply get into bed with Adobe as an enterprise client.
