"FMS 3 supports AS3 only on the client side. Services (Applications) will continue to be developed using AS1"

Disappointing!

I guess if I had an FMS project, I'd learn it, but I came to AS at version 2, I just learned AS3 - I'm not particularly interested in learning AS1. Or is my attitude wrong?

not at all, AS1 is pretty lame especially now that we're all coding AS3 on the client. And 'FMS 3 supports AS3 only on the client side' is misleading as FMS3 does not run on the client, the Flash Player does. The correct answer is: No, FMS3 does not support AS3.

doesn't AS2 compile down to AS1 bytecode?
# Posted By eric dolecki | 9/6/07 3:05 PM
yes eric it does. But it's not server side AS2 we want (although that would be a step foreard), it's AS3 ;-)

at least my copy of o'reilly Programming Flash Communication Server, which I've yet to get around to reading, hasn't gone much out of date?

One of the many advantages that Red5 has over FMS is that we use Java as the primary language for the server-side. I'm surprised to see that FMS 3 hasn't moved to a more robust language. JavaScript (AS1) for server-side coding is just miserable. No proper debugging, OOP features are lacking, limited code insight, etc...

It's nice to see that they are finally going to support some type of plugin architecture via C++, but it seems to me that Red5's direct access to anything Java can do will far out pace that feature.

Anyway, thanks for posting this Stefan!

Hi Bram,

It looks like your comments are being cut off. I was able to read what you said in the email that was sent to me since I subscribed to the thread.

Hi Chris,

last try ;)

besides the good news, i think that they are sleeping at FMS headquarters with no AS2 or 3 support. For example: frontend i make extensive use of OOP and AS1 really set back the way of thinking and developing to previous millenium. It

Finally i found it... it cuts my message at the apostrophe.

Its an obstacle in app development. Im also planning my new projects on Red5 while the serverside is complex and find in Red5 a suitable friend.

haha! Bram, I am glad that you were finally able to post your comment, although in quite a fragmented way.

Well thats just great. i started a project 8 months ago and it was all about trying to get FFMPEG to work on the server so the client could upload .mov via flash CMS and then convert to flv on the fly.
Now i got to re-do my code since we now have H.264 support.
I am glad that FMS 3 is sticking with AS1 -2
I started coding with AS1 and then progressed to AS2. AS3 is a whole new ball game and i probably wont touch it unless i am being paid to do so.

If you are fluient with AS1-2 then using FMS is a breeze and the same goes for building Flash lite content.

just my 2 cents.

I guess anyone creating H.264 with the new version of FME will be liable to pay MPEG-LA license costs?

Can anyone confirm this? How does it work? How much??

Does anyone know if they will release the screen sharing functionality. I know it needs a seperate codec but it would be nice to all the long time FMS users who want to deploy apps with the use of screen sharing would be nice.
