Flash On the Beach

Alltop, all the cool kids (and me)

The Wowza team today announced a preview release of Wowza Media Server Pro which adds support for H.264/AAC playback as well as AMF3.
Looks like this space is hotting up and it didn't take the Wowza guys long to implement this feature. While there is no support for live H.264 streaming just yet it marks a significant step for Wowza. Whether or not we will ever see RTMPE implemented by servers other than FMS3 remains to be seen.

"Fast forward, fast rewind and slow motion playback of H.264/AAC media files is not supported. We are still determining if these features will be possible with H.264/AAC content."

Your point being...?

Sorry - I didn't mean to be oblique. This sounds pretty fatal to me. Shouldn't a streaming server added support for H.264 be able to support fast-forward and rewind this format? I'm honestly no expert though, so I was hoping to learn something from people's comments. Until then I'm sticking with FMSS, even though a Java server that does H.264 flash streaming well would be perfect for me.

No problem. I believe the fast forward and rewind features are unique to wowza (FMS does not support this feature). This is a different feature from seeking AFAIK

Thanks for that. You learn something new every day.

fast forward and fast rewind in H.264 is difficult because of the various frame type (I, P, Idf, B) and because of multiple reference.

I guess soon Red5 will also support H.264

Correct, Red5, or more specifically, our team member Paul Gregoire is working on the h.264 support. This should be done pretty soon. We are releasing Red5 0.7 today or tomorrow, and the h.264 stuff will follow soon thereafter in 0.7.1

I'm having problems getting cellphone generated video files like .mp4 and .3gp to play back in flash. Get only audio with mp4 files and just progress bar with 3gp files.

I'm currently testing with a SonyEricsson k850i.

Any thoughts? :-)

@Chris the Whiz
The mp4 files probably don't play because they're using a different video codec (not h.264)

Thanks Chris for sharing this information with us. I am waiting to hear 0.7.1 release very soon from Red5 team.
