Flash On the Beach

Alltop, all the cool kids (and me)

According to this article, there won't be any support for Flash on the iPhone anytime soon. What sounds very much like a copout, Steve Jobs claimed that the full-blown PC Flash version "performs too slow to be useful" and that Flash Lite "is not capable of being used with the Web".
What he's trying to tell us is that the iPhone is underpowered to display most of today's web pages.

I personally don't really care much about this. The iPhone is still an outsider in terms of handset penetration. What would worry me more if I was in Adobe's shoes is Nokia's Silverlight initiative.

I'm totally disappointed about this, but I
don't really know why I was expecting the iPhone/iTouch to be powerful enough to handle a full flash player in first place

well..maybe one day
/me back to desktop Flex

Adobe has a lot of focus on the mobile and devices front. There are challenges that everyone in the industry must face namely maximizing CPU and GPU in the phones and battery life. I'm not sure how Microsoft expects to drive Silverlight on the phone when it has a difficult enough time trying to drive it on the web. However, this is not like it wasn't expected. They're just covering their bases like Adobe is. Silverlight is just a little late for the party.

Wasn't the iPhone recently rated as the #2 best-selling smartphone? Yeah, sounds to me like it's a real outsider.

Have you considered that Apple is unwilling to pay the LICENSING FEE to Adobe for putting the flash player in there phone. Or how about Adobe doesnt want to see flash on the iphone? You'll note that there was never a version of Flash Lite that was capable of being legally licensed for Windows Mobile.

The only reason Jobs doesn't want to go with Flash Lite 3 is because it doesn't support H.264. Apple won't yield to another codec.

And what is the reason that we never saw any Flash Lite products on the windows mobile platform?

I know that my product doesn't have a use as a phone, but I have the Archos 605 wifi 80GB PMP. It plays flash wonderfully, either directly on the player or on the internet. So I see no reason why apple can't add flash. Archos also plays many other types of formats that the iphone or ipod will not recognize. I know that the Archos isn't credit card thin like the i-Players but it is far superior as to what you can play on the PMP. Would be great to see more reviews and improvements on the player!!
