Good morning coders, and what a morning it is. There's some huge, huge, huuuge news. Did I mention how huge this is?

Flash Player 10 Beta has just dropped on Labs and while the most hyped features center around 3D support and custom filters (amongst other things), there's also a goodiebag full of toys for the audio/video crowd.
How do you fancy some UDP? Peer to peer? Speex audio codec support (finally!)?

Let's dig a little deeper. The new rich media features in Flash Player 10 beta cannot be leveraged until the next version of Flash Media Server ships (this is likely to be a dot release to go hand in hand with the Player 10 release). However you can apply to take part in the FMS prerelease program and test these features before they are publicly released.

The next version of FMS and Player 10 will introduce a new protocol, RTMFP, which stands for Real Time Messaging Flow Protocol. This is a low latency, UDP based protocol that is based on Amicima's MFP protocol. Amicima was aquired by Adobe in 2006.

It sounds likely that FMS will act like a switchboard to connect various Flash clients into an optional peer to peer mode, offering high quality, low latency audio and video communications, and thereby sidestepping any bandwidth flowing through the server itself. Did I mention higher quality and lower latency? Think Skype inside a Flash application. Oh yes, I'll take two of those please.

In addition to the new protocol there's a new audio codec, Speex, to go with it. And what a great choice this codec is since Speex is open-source, as well as patent and royalty-free. It will be a revelation compared to Nellymoser, the only audio encoder that's currently present in the Flash Player.

There are tons of other exciting new features in Player 10 (enhanced text support - yeah), you can check a list here.

Oh and btw, Player 10, codenamed Astro, is really making some noise with its new sound features.

Rock on.

Will the Speex audio encoder be integrated into the FlashPlayer itself or will it be in Flash Media Encoder?
The new text engine sounds great, having to embed fonts (and thus a much b

It sounds like Speex will be in the Player (is already in there in Player 10 beta), and I guess it may also be added to FME.

A-WE-SO-ME

I just hope we will also get encoders in the flash player "bundle".

Incredible features, this will allow a whole new world of ria and audio/video quality.

Why wouldn't ADBE update the video codec to VP7 in Astro? It's already licensed and would provide a HQ alternative to 264....without the patent pool fees!
Move Network's video is still the best on the net....Silverlight and JavaFX video are coming, ADBE should have raised the bar with another HQ video option!

Probably because the community is still digesting H.264, not even a year added - and everybody's still moving there, with tons of extant content and more every day... Also because that's proprietary and Adobe seems to be moving in the other direction.

Note in the press release Adobe highlighted how fast H.264 has been adopted in Flash, which is likely another clue that they want to stay the standards/open course now.

Great news.

Did anyone figure out how to enable Speex yet? The Microphone class has a new attribute 'codec' (a string), but setting it to 'Speex' does not seem to change anything.

Adobe, open source RTMP and RTMFP!! MS and Sun are using open protocols and your install base may become eroded if devs have to RE your protocols all the time :(
Lastly, bravo on Speex and h.264

I can't wait to get my hands dirty on it! :)

@Bruce P

At this point I doubt Adobe gives a rat's butt if the VP6 codec is in Flash let alone the VP7 codec.

whuhuuu!

great specs !

i would be happy to see native support for more different video codecs. FLV is great for online content but terrible for offline work.

is p2p not a direct threat to FMS?

Flash is moving to become more and more a full application development tool which can be used to be in a offline and online enviroment at the same time.

@Bruce P

There ya go Bruce. As long as they keep improving VP6 there is no need for VP7.

On2 Improves VP6 Video Quality for Adobe Flash Video by up to 40%
